The thematic behind the caterpillar is that of going back to childish imagination. The clash between childhood wonder and adulthood responsibilities. Being the final piece in the trilogy of paintings, the end result of self discovery should reflect of past experiences moving forward. The reflection of the imagination of a child is a start.

I was debating whether to have a person being the main subject or the caterpillar itself. Having a person hold the caterpillar is some fashion would relate to the first painting, creating a sense of entropy between the three. I decided I wanted the caterpillar to take priority in order to focus in on the imaginative side of this piece and the meaning behind it.
